When you lift up a laser mouse and look into the red light, is it damaging to your eyes?

Joke if you absolutely must. But then give me a decent answer, please. I have always wondered this. Thanks. When you lift up a laser mouse and look into the red light, is it damaging to your eyes?
Laser light CAN be damaging to the eyes if it has a power of 5 milliwatts (mW) or more. However, the light from the laser in a mouse is less than 1 mW, about the same as a supermarket barcode scanner. When you lift up a laser mouse and look into the red light, is it damaging to your eyes?
The lazar from a cordless mouse is too weak. However, I'm sure it will not be long until someone is blowing it out of proportion. I have seen warnings not to stare at the light for long periods of time... Someone needs to try it out.
We usually tell our patients that these lights are considered to be safe for normal use. I think that staring into it is not normal use, but staring into any bright or concentrated light or laser source is not good for you in any sense. The every day usages of these things is safe and does not require protective eyewear. It is a good quesiton and one that many people have asked, so I don't think anyone should joke with you about it, it is a good thing to think about and question. What else can we think of that we might want to learn about? I think you are really smart and cool. Thank you for a good quesiton.
